Training Session

Your own line time to keep building depth and skills between courses, with a freediving buddy.

Keep diving

Stay sharp on the line

Already certified to Wave 2 or similar? A training session gives you your own line time, no instructor, to keep building depth, refine your technique and stay comfortable in the water with a freediving buddy. We may ask you to do an intro coaching session first to refine your buddying and safety.

Freediving is a practice, not a qualification. What you learn on a course fades if you do not use it, and the fastest way to keep depth and comfort is simply to get in the water regularly with someone competent watching your dives.

  • No instructor: just you and a freediving buddy on the line.
  • Open to freedivers certified to Wave 2 or an equivalent.
  • Small groups, real attention, calm conditions.

What is a training session?

The line, a buddy, and no syllabus

Freediving is a practice, not a qualification. What you learn on a course fades if you do not use it, and the fastest way to keep depth and comfort is simply to get in the water regularly with someone competent watching your dives.

A training session gives you exactly that and nothing more: a set-up line, a session in the water, and a freediving buddy. There is no instructor and no programme. You decide what you dive, you run your own safety with your buddy, and you take responsibility for your own dives, which is why it is open to freedivers already certified to Wave 2 or an equivalent.

If you are new to us, we may ask you to do an intro coaching session first. It is not a test to pass, it is so we have seen your buddying and safety before you rely on them in open water. After that, training sessions are the cheapest way to keep diving while you are on the island.

Before you join

Who can train

Training sessions are self-led, so the bar is higher than for a course:

  • Hold a Molchanovs Wave 2 certification or an equivalent from another agency, and bring the card.
  • Dive with a buddy. Nobody trains alone, and running safety for each other is part of the deal.
  • Be current and comfortable at the depth you plan to dive. A training session is not the place to try something new.
  • Be in good general health. A medical questionnaire applies.
  • Be willing to do an intro coaching session first if we have not dived with you before.

Why Gili Air

Somewhere you can actually train regularly

Consistency is the whole point of training, and consistency needs easy water. Here it is 27 to 30 degrees year-round, a 3mm suit is enough, and the sites are five to fifteen minutes out by boat, so a session costs you a morning rather than a day.

Visibility runs from about 10 metres in the wet season to 35 in the dry, and the sea is diveable all year, with April to October the calmest. It is why people end up staying for weeks and diving most days.

Training sessions, answered

Who can join a training session?

Freedivers certified to Molchanovs Wave 2 or an equivalent from another agency. Bring your card. If you are certified below that, a coaching session is the right booking instead.

Is there an instructor?

No, that is the difference. A training session is your own line time with a freediving buddy. If you want someone coaching your dives and reviewing your footage, book a coaching session.

Can I train on my own?

No. Freediving is done with a buddy, always, and running safety for each other is not optional. If you arrive without one, tell us when you book and we will see who else is in the water that session.

Why might you ask me to do a coaching session first?

Because self-led diving depends entirely on your buddying and safety being solid, and we would rather see them once than assume them. It is a short, practical check, not an exam, and it is a good use of a first session anyway.

What equipment do I need?

Tell us what you have and what you need when you book. Plenty of freedivers at this level bring their own suit, mask and fins, and we will confirm what we can set you up with for the session.

How often should I train?

As often as the sea and your ears allow, with rest between deep sessions. Depth responds to regularity far more than to individual big days, which is why people on longer stays book training sessions repeatedly rather than one heroic one.

Is anything payable on the day?

The Gili Matra Marine Park fee of IDR 100,000 per person applies to reef sessions. It is a one-off, valid around 30 days, and paid to the park rather than to us.
