What is Stress & Rescue?

Calm under pressure, by practice

Stress & Rescue trains you to prevent accidents and to respond when prevention fails. You learn to read body language, defuse stress before it becomes panic, and carry out self rescue and diver rescue techniques.

It pairs with React Right, the first aid, CPR, oxygen and AED course. Together they are the foundation for the Divemaster rating, and for being the diver everyone wants as a buddy.

Divers practising rescue skills in confined water

From theory to real scenarios

You build each response until it is automatic, then prove it in the ocean.

  1. Theory and React Right

SSI digital learning on stress, prevention and accident management: how to spot the small signs of stress on the boat and on the surface long before they become panic, and how an emergency is actually managed. If you do not already hold a first aid and CPR certification taken in the last 24 months, we run React Right for you first, which covers first aid, CPR, oxygen and AED.

  2. Confined water skills

In shallow water you practise the mechanics on their own: self rescue, cramp removal, towing a tired diver, approaching and controlling a panicked diver, and bringing an unresponsive diver to the surface while giving rescue breaths. You repeat each one until you stop having to think about it.

  3. Open water scenarios

Your instructor stages realistic emergencies on the reef, in scenarios that run to a maximum of 30 m: a panicked diver at the surface, a missing buddy and a search pattern, an unresponsive diver at depth. You manage each one from the first signal through the tow, the exit and the handover, and then we take it apart together.

Course requirements

Who can take it

Rescue asks a little more of you than earlier courses. To join you need to:

  • Hold an SSI Advanced Adventurer certification, or an equivalent from another agency.
  • Hold a first aid and CPR certification taken within the last 24 months, such as React Right, which we can run for you.
  • Be in good general health, and comfortable working in the water for a sustained period.
  • Complete the SSI medical questionnaire. Any yes answer needs a physician's approval to dive before you get in the water.

Why Gili Air

Steady water to focus on skills

Gili Air's calm, protected sites let you concentrate on scenarios instead of fighting current or cold. Warm water around 28 to 30 degrees and short boat rides mean more practice and less fatigue.

Varied reefs and easy shore access give your instructor plenty of realistic settings to stage a rescue, on the surface and below it.

A small dive center, done properly

Small groups

Four students per instructor at most, so you are never a number in a crowd.

A local crew

Instructors who grew up diving these reefs and know every site by heart.

SSI blended learning

Study online at your own pace, then spend your water time actually diving, not sat in a classroom.

Honest pricing

Clear prices and quality rental gear, with no hidden extras beyond the Marine Park fee.

Rescue Diver, answered

Is the Rescue course hard?

It is the most demanding recreational course and also the one divers enjoy most. You will be challenged, and you will finish far more confident.

Do I need a first aid certificate first?

Yes, a current first aid and CPR certification. If you do not have one, we run the React Right course for you as part of your training.

Will we simulate real rescues?

Yes. Your instructor stages realistic scenarios in the water, from tired and panicked divers to an unresponsive diver at depth.

What certification do I need to start?

An SSI Advanced Adventurer, or an equivalent certification from another agency.

Does it count toward Divemaster?

Yes. Stress & Rescue and a current React Right are required before you can begin the Divemaster program.

How recent does my first aid certification have to be?

It needs to have been taken within the last 24 months. If yours has lapsed, or you have never done one, we run React Right, the SSI first aid, CPR, oxygen and AED course, before or alongside your Rescue training.

How fit do I need to be?

You need to be in good general health and comfortable working in the water for a while, because towing and lifting a diver is real physical effort. You do not need to be an athlete. Everyone completes the SSI medical questionnaire first, and any yes answer needs a physician's approval to dive before you start.

What if I have not dived in a while?

Come in a day early and do a refresher. If it has been more than about 12 months, we would rather rebuild your buoyancy and mask skills in a quiet pool session than have you rediscover them in the middle of a rescue scenario.

Is there a decompression chamber on the Gili Islands?

No. There is no chamber on the Gilis. The nearest is in Mataram on Lombok, and the route runs by speedboat and then ambulance, with further chambers in Bali. On this course you learn the first part of that chain yourself: recognising the symptoms, giving oxygen, and calling the DAN emergency hotline. It is also why we ask every diver here to carry insurance covering chamber treatment and evacuation.

How long after the course before I can fly or trek Rinjani?

The same rule as any multi-day diving: at least 18 hours before a flight, and a full 24 hours before a flight or the Mount Rinjani trek, because the trek climbs to altitude. Rescue days are tiring, so most people are glad of the buffer anyway.

What is included, and what do I pay separately?

Your instructor, the SSI Stress & Rescue digital materials, all equipment, the confined water sessions and open water scenarios, your certification fee and digital logbook. React Right is a separate course if you need it. Paid separately: the Gili Matra Marine Park fee of IDR 100,000, a one-off valid around 30 days and paid in cash to the park, the optional IDR 50,000 Gili Eco Trust donation, and personal costs such as accommodation, meals and insurance.
